Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor
Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) brings vital water, sanitation and hygiene to the poorest urban communities. We’ve supported its work to bring high-quality sanitation services to 100,000 low-income populations living in Antananarivo, Mahajanga, Toliara and their outskirts.

ACTION
WSUP’s approach goes beyond “taps and toilets”. It aims to transform urban water and sanitation systems and policies to ensure services work well and are effectively operated, financially sustainable and politically endorsed.
WSUP works with stakeholders in utilities, municipal governments, communities, regulators and businesses.
It assists public service providers and helps them reduce leakage, lower water consumption, or improve waste management. It also trains small private operators to strengthen their operations in waste collection, transport and treatment. It builds or rehabilitates communal water kiosks and laundry blocks, engaging with the communities to set up Water User Associations.
The organisation also works with local and national authorities to regulate water and sanitation systems, defining clear responsibilities, accountability, and resource planning and management.
