WATER.ORG

Founded by Gary White and Matt Damon, Water.org is a global nonprofit organisation working to help people get access to safe water and sanitation through affordable financing, such as small loans. We funded it in Haiti and Ethiopia.

CHALLENGE

In Haiti, 40% of the population lacks access to clean water (50% in rural areas) and only one in five has access to a sanitary toilet. Despite remarkable achievements over the last 15 years,

in Ethiopia’s rural regions, access to clean water and proper sanitation is still largely inadequate.

ACTION

IN HAITI

Water.org built two gravity-fed spring catchment and distribution systems that provide safe water for communities living in Ennery and in the hills of Corail Thor, south of Carrefour.

Water management committees were set up and trained by the National Water and Sanitation Authority to manage day-to-day maintenance and operations, including the collection of user fees, the supervision of kiosk managers, routine repairs, and financial reporting.

Water.org teams organised community meetings, public events, door-to-door campaigns, and a community festival to mobilise and educate the local population on the importance of hygiene practices to reduce the risks of water-borne diseases.

IN ETHIOPIA

Water.org and Amref Health Africa worked together to reach the population of Dera, where water is mostly unsafe and open defecation is the norm.

100 water systems and nine latrine blocks were constructed or rehabilitated by local workers. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committees were created to manage regular maintenance.

880 public conversations ensured communities understood and fully supported the financial implications of the infrastructures and could actively monitor their functionality and quality.
