MEDAIR

Medair is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to relieving human suffering in some of the world’s most remote and devastated places. We have funded its relief activities in Lebanon, Madagascar, Somalia and Ukraine, and are currently supporting its operations in Afghanistan and Yemen.

CHALLENGE

As Yemen enters its ninth year of conflict, the humanitarian crisis in the country is reported to be among the worst in the world. The conflict has displaced more than 4 million people and significantly increased the incidence of infectious diseases, including cholera, measles, polio, dengue fever, whooping cough, and diphtheria. The healthcare system is near collapse, with healthcare services limited amid chronic shortages of medical supplies and equipment, while medical staff are not receiving their salaries. Only around 50% of health facilities in the country are operational.

ACTION

Medair has been working in the Al Dhale’e, Lahj and Aden governorates in the south of Yemen since 2018, providing lifesaving health and nutrition services, establishing safe drinking water sources and educating people on hygiene, health and nutrition.

Medair teams are in particular supporting five health centres to ensure that the doctors, nurses and midwives are properly trained, that emergency obstetric and neonatal care can be accessed, that malnutrition treatments and routine child vaccinations are provided, and that patients on long-term treatment continue to get the medications they need. Medair is also in charge of the deployment of Mobile Medical Teams to enhance access to life-saving healthcare and nutrition services in hard-to-reach areas.

IMPACT
