MEDAIR

Medair is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to relieving human suffering in some of the world’s most remote and devastated places. We have funded its relief activities in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Somalia, Ukraine and Yemen.

CHALLENGE

As Yemen enters its eleventh year of conflict, the humanitarian crisis in the country is reported to be among the worst in the world. The conflict has displaced more than 4 million people and significantly increased the incidence of infectious diseases, like cholera. The healthcare system is near collapse with only around 50% of health facilities in the country operational. Food insecurity and malnutrition continue to affect large portions of the country. In 2024, 17.6 million Yemenis were experiencing food insecurity, and nearly half of the children under five were suffering from chronic malnutrition.

ACTION

Medair worked in the Al Dhale’e, Lahj and Aden governorates in the south of Yemen between 2018 and 2025, providing lifesaving health and nutrition services, establishing safe drinking water sources and educating people on hygiene, health and nutrition.

Medair teams in particular supported five health centres in Lahj Governorate to ensure that health workers were properly trained, that medical, obstetric and surgical patient emergencies were referred to district hospitals, that communicable and non-communicable diseases were treated, and that malnutrition treatments and routine child vaccinations were provided.

Medair also deployed Mobile Medical Teams to enhance access to life-saving healthcare, immunisations, reproductive health services and nutrition services in hard-to-reach areas.

Our support enabled Medair to keep the five health centres open until December 2024.
