REACHING WHERE THE WATER DOESN’T
2015-2020
IFRC
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian network, bringing together almost 14 million volunteers. It is present in virtually every community and reaches 160 million people annually through long-term services, development programmes and disaster response. We funded IFRC in Nepal to respond to the Gorkha earthquake and in Uganda, Myanmar and Cambodia to improve community access to water and sanitation.
CHALLENGE
ACTION
Working with governments and the national Red Cross societies in the Banteay Meanchey, Kratié and Svay Rieng provinces in Cambodia, Myanmar’s Dry Zone, and the Albertine region in Uganda, IFRC provided rural and peri-urban communities with access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities and good hygiene knowledge and practices.
Red Cross volunteer health promoters reached people door-to-door and through schools to encourage the construction and use of household latrines, bathing shelters, drying racks, hand washing facilities and rubbish pits.
In target communities, water systems were set up and existing boreholes rehabilitated. These use simple technologies that villages can now use and maintain themselves.
In Uganda, oral rehydration points were established in fishing communities as a first line response to cholera outbreaks, managed by trained community volunteers.
IMPACT
IFRC improved the living conditions of thousands of people, focusing on the adoption of good hygiene practices and the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
