Imagine Worldwide

Imagine Worldwide designs, tests and implements foundational learning programmes for school kids, using software that provides a complete tailored curriculum. Its child-directed learning approach operates off-line and off-grid, requires little adult support and is adaptable to different environments — particularly important in emergency contexts. We’re funding Imagine Worldwide to enable over 339,000 kids across 751 schools in Sierra Leone to learn basic numeracy and literacy.

CHALLENGE

Since 2018, public spending on education has doubled in Sierra Leone and the number of children in schools has risen by more than half. However, the national education system faces considerable challenges with an estimated 97% of children unable to read or understand a simple text by age 10 and more than 40% of primary school teachers being untrained.

ACTION

Imagine Worldwide designs, tests and scales learning programmes where children learn at their own pace, using software that provides a complete curriculum adapted to their cultural context and language. This means that children need little adult support whilst learning. The software is delivered on tablets, without requiring internet connectivity, and charged by solar power or another appropriate energy source.

Partnering with the Ministry of Education, the office of the Mayor of Freetown, Rising Academy Network (RAN), EducAid and West Africa Blue, Imagine Worldwide is scaling a a tablet-based learning programme that already serves 10,000 children across 50 schools, aiming at serving over 339,000 kids across 751 schools by the end of 2026.

IMPACT

Evaluations of Imagine Worldwide’s programmes in Malawi showed major learning impacts in literacy and maths for both girls and boys.
